She Was a Phantom of Delight

"She Was a Phantom of Delight" by William Wordsworth

She was a phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely Apparition, sent
To be a moment's ornament;
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;
Like Twilight's, too, her dusky hair;
But all things else about her drawn
From May-time and the cheerful Dawn;
A dancing Shape, an Image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and way-lay.

I saw her upon a nearer view,
A Spirit, yet a Woman too!
Her household motions light and free,
And steps of virgin liberty;
A countenance in which did meet
Sweet records, promises as sweet;
A Creature not too bright or good
For human nature's daily food;
For transient sorrows, simple wiles,
Praise, blame, love, kisses, tears and smiles.

And now I see with eye serene
The very pulse of the machine;
A Being breathing thoughtful breath,
A Traveler between life and death;
The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill;
A perfect Woman, nobly planned,
To warm, to comfort, and command;
And yet a Spirit still, and bright,
With something of angelic light.

TRANSLATION:

Ela era um Espírito da alegria
She was a Phantom of delight

Ela era um Espírito da alegria
She was a Phantom of delight

Quando a vi no primeiro dia;
When first she gleamed upon my sight;

Bela Aparição brilhante
A lovely Apparition, sent

Enviada ao encanto do instante;
To be a moment’s ornament

Seus olhos, como o Crepúsculo sereno;
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;

Como o Crepúsculo, seu cabelo moreno;
Like Twilight’s, too, her dusky hair;

E tudo mais que a envolvia
But all things else about her drawn

À Aurora e à Primavera pertencia;
From May-time and the cheerful Dawn;

Forma dançante, imagem a alegrar?
A dancing Shape, an Image gay,

A surpreender, assolar e assombrar.
To haunt, to startle, and way-lay

Olhei-a de perto, lá estava ela,
I saw her upon nearer view,

Um Espírito, mas também uma Donzela!
A Spirit, yet a Woman too!

Seu movimento leve, solto e frugal,
Her household motions light and free,

E passos da liberdade virginal;
And steps of virgin-liberty;

No semblante se encontraram as nuanças
A countenance in which did meet

Das doces promessas e doces lembranças;
Sweet records, promises as sweet;

Criatura nem brilhante ou boa demais
A Creature not too bright or good

Para os afazeres cotidianos e normais,
For human nature’s daily food;

Ou a sofrer passageiro e simples desejos,
For transient sorrows, simple wiles,

Louvor, culpa, amor, lágrimas, sorrisos e beijos.
Praise, blame, love, kisses, tears, and smiles.

Com os olhos tranquilos posso contemplar
And now I see with eye serene

Desta máquina o verdadeiro pulsar;
The very pulse of the machine;

Um ser que, pensativo, respira forte;
A Being breathing thoughtful breath,

Um Viajante, em meio à vida e à morte;
A Traveller between life and death

A razão firme, a vontade temperada,
The reason firm, the temperate will,

Uma perfeita Mulher soberbamente forjada;
A perfect Woman, nobly planned,

Paciência, visão, habilidade e poder,
Endurance, foresight, strenght, and skill;

Para alertar, confortar e reger;
To warn, to comfort, and command;

E ainda um Espírito com fulgor magistral,
And yet a Spirit still, and bright

Com algo da luz angelical.
With something of angelic light.

Daffodils

The Daffodils I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon the inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

TRASLATION:

Narcisos

Solitário qual nuvem vaguei
Pairando sobre vales e prados,
De repente a multidão avistei
Miríade de narcisos dourados;
Junto ao lago, e árvores em movimento,
Tremulando e dançando sob o vento.

Contínua qual estrelas brilhando
Na Via Láctea em eterno cintilar,
A fila infinita ia se alongando
Pelas margens da baía a rondar:
Dez mil eu vislumbrei num só olhar
Balançando as cabeças a dançar.

As ondas também dançavam neste instante
Mas nelas via-se maior a alegria;
Um poeta só podia estar exultante
Frente a tão jubilosa companhia:
Olhei – e olhei – mas pouco sabia
Da riqueza que tal cena me trazia.

pois quando me deito num torpor,
Estado de vaga suspensão,
Eles refulgem em meu olho interior
Que é para a solitude uma bênção;
Então meu coração começa a se alegrar,
E com os narcisos põe-se a bailar
